NORTH EASTERN REGIONAL SUSTAINABILITY DIALOGUE

A Pre Event To Global Sustainability Summit 2023 (GSS 23)

Indian Institute of Sustainable Development (IISD) and it’s initiative Carbon Minus India (CMI), New Delhi in collaboration with Department of Rural Studies, Tripura University organized North Eastern Regional Sustainability Dialogue – Pre-Summit for Global Sustainability Summit (GSS 2023) (http://gss2023 .iisdindia.in) at Tripura University on May 19, 2023. Unity of Nation Action for Climate Change Council (UNACcc) and North East Training Research and Advocacy Foundation (NETRA Foundation) were the supporting partners of the event.

The program began with the welcome address by Dr. Jayant Chowdhary, Chief Coordinator of the Pre- Summit and HOD (In-Charge), Department of Rural Studies, Tripura University. The Vice Chancellor Of the Tripura University, Dr. Ganga Prasad Prasain, was the Chief Patron. Dr. Prasain
declared that 2 Youth Climate Ambassadors will be selected from the North-Eastern States and will be recognized at the GSS, 2023 on July 20
at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

Dr. Ganga Prasad focused on the adoption of a new education policy and the creation of job opportunities. He also emphasized the potential of ecotourism as a key sector for the development of the North East region. He also highlighted the need to protect the climate while conserving the region’s forests, recognizing the interdependence between the two. https://youtu.be/oH2XMgBlCGA

Dr. Manindra Tiwari, representing the Indian Institute of Sustainable
Development (IISD), shed light on the NorthEast region’s potential contributions to sustainability. He noted that India has emerged as a
significant force in climate change mitigation and adaptation. Dr. Tiwari
emphasized that developed countries should take the lead in assisting developing nations by providing them with new technologies and supporting the implementation of adaptation and mitigation strategies. He also mentioned the introduction of the Global Climate Facility through provisions such as the Green Climate Fund and the Special Climate Change Fund.

Professor Sabyasachi Dasgupta from the Department of Forestry raised thought-provoking questions regarding the importance of Sustainable Development Goal 15 (SDG 15) for the North Eastern part of India. He emphasized the rich biodiversity of the region, which encompasses not only ecological diversity but also cultural diversity. He highlighted how this unique biodiversity contributes to poverty alleviation and sustainable development in the North East.
Shri Sushant Banik, Scientific Officer from the Department of Science, Technology, and Environment, Government of Tripura, emphasized the need to focus on climate vulnerability. He stressed the significance of understanding and addressing climate risks, including extreme weather events, erratic rainfall patterns, and the melting of glaciers. In conclusion, the North Eastern Regional Sustainability Dialogue – Pre-Summit for Global Sustainability Summit (GSS, 2023) at Tripura University brought together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss sustainability challenges and climate change issues specific to the North Eastern region of India. The event emphasized the need for collaborative efforts and highlighted the potential contributions of the region towards sustainability. By addressing these challenges, the North East can play a significant role in achieving global sustainability goals.
